Two canals, two big problems: a global shipping mess

More than 50 ships queued to cross the Panama Canal on a recent day, from tankers carrying propane to cargo ships packed with food. A prolonged drought has prompted the canal operator to reduce the number of crossings, leading to longer waits. The tolls paid by ships are now about eight times more expensive than normal.

Chile culminates participation in 13th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization, highlighting advances in investment facilitation and MSMEs

The 13th Ministerial Conference (CM13) of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which began on February 26 and was attended by a Chilean delegation led by the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations (SUBREI), Claudia Sanhueza, accompanied by the Director General of Multilateral Economic Affairs, Marcela Otero, the Chilean Ambassador to the WTO, Sofia Boza, and their teams, ended on Saturday, March 2, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Customs maintains support for the arrival of international aid for those affected by the fires

International aid for those affected by the fires in the Valparaíso region continues. This week, Metropolitan Customs supported the arrival of the LATAM plane from Panama with the donation made to the country by the United Nations Refugee Agency, consisting of 48 Emergency Housing Units, 1,944 thermal blankets and 5,040 solar lamps.

Chile-Paraguay Economic-Trade Agreement (ETA) enters into effect, modernizing the bilateral relationship

The negotiations for this agreement, which were led by the Subrei teams, began in 2020 and focused on complementing and modernizing the bilateral relationship, governed by ACE35 Chile-Mercosur; and, after four rounds, culminated successfully with its signing on December 1, 2021.

WCO hosts Global RILO Meeting to discuss intelligence-related issues

From January 30 to February 1, 2024, the World Customs Organization (WCO) hosted the 31st Global Meeting of Regional Intelligence Liaison Offices (RILOs) at its headquarters in Brussels. RILO managers from around the world gathered to discuss a wide range of topics, including intelligence gathering, law enforcement application management and governance of the Global RILO Network.

First trade report of the year showed a rebound in Chile's trade

The first trade report of the year, prepared by the Directorate of Studies of the Undersecretariat of International Economic Relations (Subrei) -with data from the Central Bank and Customs-, showed a rebound in Chile's trade exchange, which climbed to US$ 16,144 million, up 2.5% compared to January 2023 (+US$ 400 million).

IATA and ICAO expand cooperation on dangerous goods transport regulations

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have expanded their long-standing cooperation to establish and implement global standards for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air. An agreement to this effect was concluded at IATA's Executive Offices in Geneva during a visit by ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, during which further collaboration between the two organisations was discussed.

New strategic plan with a focus on security presented by Customs

On January 26, International Customs Day, the strategic plan 2023-2026 of the institution, which has the mission to control the entry and exit of goods from Chile and collects 30% of the taxes of the public coffers, which allow the government to develop projects and programs that benefit Chilean men and women, was presented to the officials of the customs service.

Chile and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) successfully complete negotiations to modernize existing Free Trade Agreement

This Friday in Santiago, after the end of the seventh round of negotiations, the teams from Chile and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) - conformed by Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein - successfully completed the stage of negotiations for the modernization of the existing Free Trade Agreement between Chile and EFTA.

Maersk and CMA CGM confirm freight rate hikes

Maersk and CMA CGM will impose surcharges after deciding to reroute their routes following attacks on ships in the Red Sea, as concerns grow over global trade disruption. The surcharges, intended to cover longer voyages around Africa compared to routes through the Suez Canal, add to rising shipping costs since Yemen's Houthi militant group began attacking vessels.

Mega Tax Fraud: Customs Investigation was key to dismantle illicit association

Named Operation Tributes, has its origin in an investigation developed by the Chilean National Customs Service, which uncovered an organized crime network that operated under the structure of illicit association and money laundering at least between the business years 2015 to 2017, led in the customs area by one of the accused, who together with his 12 operational arms and 4 front men, were dedicated to defrauding the Treasury.
